This is a nondenominational event that unites our community’s faith groups to pray for America and her leaders. The keynote speaker this year will be Chad Lewis, BYU Associate Athletic Director. The program will also include a special musical number and an opportunity to hear from one of our finalists in the Freedom Festival youth speech contest .This program is by invitation only. We invite you to a night of honor for Fire Fighters, Police, Safety Officers, Paramedic First Responders, with our Guest Speaker, Mr. Terry Schow, VA Service officer and past Veterans Affairs of Military Affairs Director of Utah as the Featured Speaker then followed by the dignified retirement of worn and tattered Flags by Utah County Veterans Services. This event respectfully retires flags that have become so tattered and worn that they no longer properly represent the great sacrifices and values of the United States. According to the U.S. Flag Code, “the flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” The Freedom Festival Flag Retirement Ceremony begins with Children of the Daughters of the Revolution posting the National Colors of Flags flown on U.S. soil since her birth. We will also be honored to hear from one of our Freedom Festival Youth Speakers.
The BYU Centennial Carillon Tower has stood as a symbol of freedom and spirit for 49 years. This year we present BYU Carillonneurs Don Cook and Josh Fenwick. Don has performed or organized this event since his appointment to the organ faculty in 1991. Josh, a student in BYU’s civil engineering program, has been playing the carillon for two years. He especially enjoys arranging and playing music from movie scores. Their program will have something for everyone! This is one of the more simple and leisurely events of the festival. Bring lawn chairs, blankets, and picnics to the shady lawns surrounding the tower to enjoy a free evening concert. The performer is visible on a large monitor, and visitors can enjoy a short demonstration of the practice keyboard after the performance.

Each year the Freedom Festival partners with the Provo City Veterans Council to remember and honor those lost while bravely serving our nation in the Armed Forces. We welcome you to join us this Monday, May 29, at 10am for our annual Memorial Day ceremony at Provo City Cemetery. (In the event of inclement weather, the event will be moved to the Covey Center for the Arts in downtown Provo.) Check back here soon for more details on the event. This year’s National Day of Prayer Celebration will be held Sunday May 4 at 7:00 pm in Provo Community Congregational United Church of Christ, located at 175 N University Ave. We are pleased to announce this year’s key-note speaker will be Michael McClean, the platinum recording artist known for his repertoire of perfect songs for “every twist or turn in life” and for touching generations with the messages of The Forgotten Carols and Celebrating the Light. He will share with us some of his personal experiences with prayer and his witness of the hope which intense prayer can bring in times of need. His musical performances will lift our hearts and inspire our thoughts. The Utah Valley Interfaith Choir, the Utah Children’s Choir and Jewels Olsen will also be performing. With prayers performed by local church leaders, this will be an evening to remember and you will not want to miss it. Donations to the Genesis Project may be made.
The Speech Contest invites all students in grades 9-12 to speak up for freedom. The theme is the First Amendment of the Constitution. Students may speak on any aspect of the theme.* The deadline is April 1. Confirmation emails were sent to participants on April 3. Please contact SpeechContest@FreedomFestival.org if you submitted a speech and did not receive a confirmation email.
